Promote Your Business and Specialized Knowledge
To promote your business you must be willing to promote your self and your specialized knowledge. T. Harv Eker tells us that, “Rich people are willing to promote themselves and their values while poor people think negatively about sales and promotion”. So many poor people are unwilling to promote themselves. Perhaps one of the reasons they stay poor. But why is that? First they lack confidence. They worry about what others might think and fear making a mistake. It is sometimes said that doers do and teachers teach. Many people acquire specialized knowledge then advertise themselves as a coach, mentor or trainer.
Many University professors have little or no practical experience. They specialize in teaching knowledge. Teaching knowledge is awesome when it is fortified by practical experience
Jim Rohn said that formal education will make you a living but self-education will make you a fortune.
Promote Your Business is A Mantra
It is amazing how many ultra-successful people have little or no formal education. John D. Rockefeller had little education but became arguably the richest man in the world, he was a billionaire. There have been many great thinkers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and some of them have done incredible things without ever having finished college. Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg spring to mind. But perhaps the most influential technological mind of the past century has been Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple. For each of these people promote your business was a mantra.
Albert Einstein was a high school drop out. Abraham Lincoln was self-educated as was Henry Ford, Winston Churchill, Mark Twain and William Shakepeare.
Now I am not recommending dropping out of school but I am suggesting that the attainment of great wealth requires specialized knowledge and hard work, not necessarily formal education.
You cannot be taught to make a million dollars by someone who makes $100,000 per year. And similarly, if you haven’t created wealth in your life, it is hard to teach someone else how to create wealth.
Organize Your Plans
It is often said that knowledge is power but as Napoleon Hill points out in Think and Grow Rich, knowledge is potential power. It becomes real power only when it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end,
The missing link in formal education is just that, how to organize and apply theoretical knowledge so that it becomes real power and not just theory.
So Hill tells us that any man is educated if he knows where to get knowledge when he needs it and how to organize it into definite plans of action as required.
Successful men never stop learning. That is why, frequently our business is called a personal development program with a product attached. Without continued growth and development it is near impossible to succeed in the world. Hill tells us that the person who stops studying because he has finished school is doomed to a life of mediocrity.
It is often said that a college grad is perfectly equipped to live in a world that no longer exists.
So continued growth and the attainment of riches requires the acquisition of specialized knowledge and the continuing growth of that knowledge and adaptation as the world evolves and boy does the world evolve. We live in a society that is exponentially changing. Consider this 12 short years ago Facebook didn’t exist. It was founded in 2004. Wow!
Back to the original comment. Rich people are willing to promote themselves and their values. Poor people think negatively about selling and promotion. The reality is all of us are always selling. If you sling burgers at McDonalds you are still selling. You applied for your burger slinging position by filling out an applications and explaining to a hiring manager or boss why you are qualified to do that job. You sold yourself
If you asked a girl out on a date, you sold yourself. If you asked someone to marry you, you sold yourself. We are all selling something all the time so why not recognize that, get over the fear and just understand that convincing anyone to do anything is selling.
And so it is with that specialized knowledge you are acquiring. You must be willing to step outside and tell people about your knowledge and skills. That doesn’t mean bragging or being pushy.
The problem is many of us associate sales with shady or even illegal activities. No! Not so! We think of the used car salesman shoving a lemon down someone’s throat or the snake oil salesman. But hold on. Sales is an honorable profession. In fact we are all salesmen all the time. Sales is presenting an idea, product or service in an open honest manner such that a prospective client can evaluate that product or service and understand whether or not they can benefit from it. It is not pushy, dishonest or shady. Done properly, it is simply educating someone about what we can do or have that might benefit them.
Success Is A Habit
So Hill also tells us that both success and failure are largely the result of habit. In the final analysis, success depends on the habit of acquiring and maintaining specialized knowledge and packaging and presenting that knowledge to the world in an organized and saleable fashion. It requires standing tall, frequently on the shoulders of giants who have come before, humbly giving credit where credit is due and diligently pursuing our goals and dreams to the end.
One of my favorite phrases these days is keep on keeping on until…Until what? Well until you’re done, until you get to where you planned to go! Until you are finished!
