5 Steps To An Effective Social Media Strategy in 2016
In our modern internet age, social media has evolved as a powerful ally to building our home based or network marketing business. Having an efective social media strategy is essential to your network marketing success. But where to begin?
Billions of people are on social media. Facebook for example has passed 1.5 Billion active monthly users so your customer is out there somewhere. The question is how to find him (or her). Sadly , many people are doing it all wrong. Let’s start with what social media is not about
The fundamental mistakes Most People Make (What Not To Do)
It is really quite elementary. Very few marketers have an effective social media strategy in place. People go to social media to be social. Ever wonder why it is called “social” media. Here are the top four mistakes people make and there is a good chance you are making one or more of them
- People do not go to social media to discuss politics
- They do not go to social media for news updates
- They do not go to social media to buy
- They go to be entertained
The Best Way To Use Social Media (What To Do)
So the core question is what is the best way to attract potential clients on social media? Well the answer is simple, be social. Here is a list of things that wil help attract people to you
- Be entertaining
- Be inspirational
- Be an escape for other people
- Be an example of what’s possible
If you are new to social media, here is some tips for building an effective social media strategy that will help you get started.
Step 1 Choose A Platform
Pick your poison. There are so many different platforms and it is not possible for any one person to master every social media strategu available. As a beginner, it is imperative that you pick one platform and become proficient at it. Someone wildly skilled in one platform is better off than someone marginally skilled in many.
What you want to do is dive into training on your chosen platform and get results. A good benchmark is at least 2 to 5 leads per day
The most frequent question is, which one is best for me? The short answer is, “The best platform for you is the one that works best for you”. Here are some hints.
Quick Review of a Few major Platforms
Facebook is arguably the most popular platform and many people are drawn to it. The reality is, Facebook has in many ways become a spam fest. There are ways to work around the spam and use Facebook effectively. Believe it or not, there is a learning curve and I recommend taking a course in the best practices for using Facebook to generate leads for your business. Many people abuse Facebook and Facebook has become increasingly stringent about enforcing their policies and shutting down peoples account. If you are a social butterfly and like to flit around and talk to people, Facebook is quite possibly your best social media strategy.
YouTube is a great platform and many people generate lots of leads with video. But, the downside is many people are camera shy in the beginning. So if putting your face on camera causes you to cringe, maybe YouTube isn’t the best platform for you to start with. In the final analysis, you will need to learn video but you can start with other options. Want the best UTUBE training around? Click here for a free training video.
Periscope is a very popular new platform but also requires video so perhaps isn’t the best choice for a newbie who is camera shy. Click here for your 23 page Periscope cheat sheet + Video.
Instagram is wildly popular these days and done correctly it has some distinct advantages. One huge advantage is everything can be done from a smart phone. This is a particular benefit for busy mom’s on the run or executives who are moving a lot either in their car or in airports etc. Click here for your very own Instagram 10 point cheat sheet
Twitter is being used quite a bit and is a relatively easy platform to build up a following and generate leads. It has the advantage of being mobile friendly and easy to use on the run but also easy to use from a desktop or laptop computer. Now that short videos can be imbedded it is very user friendly. Linkedin is a great platform and is especially useful for finding professional people who might have an interest in your business. My opinion is it requires a little more sophistication and experience than the other platforms and is probably best reserved until one has some experience inviting and closing clients.
Step 2 Find Authority
Often newbies feel they have little to offer. Most people are afraid that the real them will be frowned upon, judged or criticized by others. When told to generate valuable content, a common concern is, “I am new, I do not have anything to offer people yet”. While this is a valid concern it is simply not true. People new to this business need to build a target audience of other relatively new people. Consider the idea that you are teaching “you” yesterday. So you really only need to be marginally ahead of your potential client.
Still having an effective social media strategy in place to fall back on is Imperative. It is a wild jungle out there and beginners need something and someone to rely on and guide them.
Leadership is a state of mind. You are a leader when you decide to be a leader.
I personally use a marketing and training platform that offers “done for you” products and services as well as capture pages that a beginner can use, sell and advertise as if they were his own, thus projecting an image of authority, confidence and experience
Step 3 Have A Strong Profile
Part of an effective social media strategy is to realize you are building “you inc.” not your dog, your grandchildren or YOUR MLM Company: YOU! A high quality picture of you is essential. You want people to come to recognize you as a trusted authority independent of your company affiliation.
In addition people actually do read your about section so it must reflect your values, lifestyle and beliefs
You also want a cover or banner that represents you, your message and your mission and relevant links to your website, blog etc.
The bottom line is your newsfeed must make a good first impression on the first scroll and must reflect your values, beliefs and lifestyle.
It is often said that people join people. They do not join opportunities.
Step 4 Post value
Another crucial part of an effective social media strategy is posting value and building curiosity vs resistance. Engage the 90/10 rule which means 90% of your postings should be valuable content and not salesy at all. For the most part you want to avoid links that go directly to capture pages as they turn people off.
Pre-condition your prospect by giving him or her valuable content first, then giving them the opportunity to go deeper or further with you.
It has been found that posts with pictures go a lot further than posts without pictures so use imagery whenever possible throughout your content
Inspirational quotes are another great way to capture the attention of your prospects and get them t0o engage with you
Another great idea is asking random questions or conducting fun polls. For example, a question like “what do you prefer on your pizza” can get a lot of engagement.
And always, always, always, give people an opportunity to go to your blog. Your blog is your hub and this is where you want to be sending your prospects and filling them with value
Remember, according to Robert Kiyosaki, “The world is a feedback mechanism” so if you are not getting the results you desire, make some adjustments.
Step 5 Work A Consistent Plan
The biggest game changer in an effective social media strategy and your business is consistency. Establish a plan and set clear objectives. It is better to blog twice a week than to blog five times one week and not at all the next week. Let your customers know what to expect from you.
Imagine working your plan so consistently that you knew you would always have people to talk to. Imagine having people reaching out to you. How awesome would that be?
